An extension to an summer batch in the archipelago of Stockholm 2006. The owners wanted a bigger house to fit their growing family. The house should be able to adapt to the different seasons and the different number of people residing in the building. The stress was to use the existing floor plan as much as possible and keep the expression of the traditional language of the house. The solution was to expand one side of the building and lift the roof and thereby creating bigger space on the ground floor but also make the attic liveable. This enables the house still to fit into its surroundings and at the same time gain a lot more space.

original apperance | dug out | new foundation | new frame

The original plan (drawn with filled walls, the removed walls are dashed) has been extended out towards the street. This gave the possiblity to extend the kitchen and bathroom as well as the living room on the ground floor. An extra bedroom was also added, on the upper floor was a new living/sleeping area created that meets the needs of more space when the entire family stays in the batch, this section can be closed off during winters and calmer times of the year.

second floor

new gable addition | the roof beam | building of walls | the dormers

The extention is adding on the existing roof angle and through the new width of the house does this give that there is more space under the roof and a new space can therefore be created. There is a void in the centre of the house to improve the communication and open up the house to the different parts, plus bring more air to the living room.

S/E | N/E | S/W | N/W - The facades of the building are quite similar to the extisting, this to preserve the feeling and autenticy of the old house and also to make as small impact as possible on the surrounding environment. The elevations are naturaly bigger but still have a proportions that fits with the area and will keep the language, colour and expression of the existing building. The only new addition will be three dormers to break the roof and bring light to the upper floor.
